  1. An atomic clock is a timekeeping device 
  2. regulated by various periodic processes
  3. occurring in atoms and molecules, such as
  4. atomic vibration or the frequency of absorbed
  5. or emitted radiation. The first atomic clock 
  6. was created at the US National Bureau of 
  7. Standards in 1948. Atomic clocks are so 
  8. accurate that minute adjustments must be made
  9. periodically to the length of the year to 
  10. keep the calendar exactly synchronized with
  11. the Earth's rotation, which has a tendency to
  12. speed up or slow down. There have been around 
  13. 20 adjustments made to the atomic clock since 
  14. 1972. In 1992 the northern hemisphere's
  15. summer was one second longer than usual. 
  16. An extra second was added to the world's time
  17. at precisely 23 hours, 59 minutes and 60 
  18. seconds on 30 June 1992.
